Every track is littered with way too many random obstacles, most of which stop the player’s kart in its tracks when hit. The actual course design is where this game’s tracks fall apart. Also, every stage has its own tune that fits it perfectly the music is the best part of the game. Living set pieces like dinosaurs, yetis, and mummies instill a bit of character. The included tracks show some creativity and promise, as they include fun locals like The Great Wall (Ancient China), a Viking Village, and a couple of Stone-age era tracks. They use tiny fonts that don’t fit with the rest of the game, and would definitely have benefitted from some cleanup.Ĭro-Mag Rally lacks a metagame, simply presenting gamers with a selection of tracks and an assortment of vehicles with varying stats to race with. The Settings menu and Credits screen look haphazardly thrown together.

But one area where the port really drops the ball is the design of the Windows Phone-specific UI screens. Now, those problems all came from the original game, though I question the wisdom of not cleaning up and enhancing the graphics during the porting process. Put Cro-Mag Rally up against a recent game like Jet Car Stunts or even the other WP7 launch racing titles and it comes up way short. The textures don’t pick up the slack due to their low resolution, and the colors are generally garish. Every single object in the game is overly angular and lacking in definition.

Looking past the cave-monster drivers (which you pretty much have to do in order to protect your retinas), the game sports some low-end Playstation One-era 3D visuals.

At the very least, the original art designer needs to look for a new field of work, such as the custodial arts. They make a decent case for regulating art and turning the world into a dystopian police state, if only to protect gamers from having to see such horrid things. The character designs of the two playable cavemen are so atrociously, heinously bad. The fault here lies mostly with the original developer, as the game has always been an affront to the eyes. Cro-Mag Rally is hands-down the most hideous 3D game in the mobile Xbox Live lineup.

I can frequently enjoy games with simplistic graphics or awkward art styles, but even I have limits. Indie Theory Just when you thought you had gaming figured out.I am not a graphics whore. But if you want an easy 200 GamerScore, then you may want to look at that WP7 version.

If you want a good kart racer, this game is a non-starter on any platform. The game doesn't seem to be that much better on the WP7 platform, with the community of TrueAchievements giving it less than a 2 star average from 94 votes. In the end, the game had so much promise and yet fell short at all the wrong times, with clearly up-scaled textiles and poor controls being the man sticking points, and as such I can't recommend you buy the game for the XBox. The AI also finished well behind me in the one race I got to play in the trial, maybe showing that rubberband AI, as in the Mario Kart games, isn't exactly a bad thing. There appeared to be no way of looking behind you, thus making aiming and timing the power-ups impossible, with the steering not good enough to get round some corners with ease, even after slowing down. The oil power-up remained on the track throughout, tripping you up later on, with the bone power-up having no impact at all on the fellow racers.

For example, the suspension boost seems to give no boost to the handling at all, with the speed boost actually making the kart uncontrollable if used at the wrong time. The power-ups, normally the most important element of a kart racer, seem to have mostly no use, and rather come back to haunt you later on in the race. The soundtrack, meanwhile, is the slightly cheesy kart-racing norm, which is to be expected and to my surprise actually fit with the gameplay quite well.Īh yes, the gameplay the place were the game starts to fail. However, on the whole the game seems to have survived the process to put it on the bigger screen graphically. Poor textiles in other places don't exactly help either. Say hello to Cro-Mag Rally, now without achievements!Īs you may expect in a kart racing game, the object of the game is to win the race, while avoiding the various obstacles set along the track by the other racers, setting some of your own along the way.įor a start, the game clearly feels like a up-scaled port of the mobile original, with the graphics appearing quite 'blocky' in places. Now, it finds itself onto the XBox 360, minus those things. Welcome to Cro-Mag Rally, a game that started life out on the iOS platform, quickly followed by a port on Windows Phone 7 that included the lovely things known as achievements and GamerScore.
